Rose perfume and pastries baking nearby. The sweet scent of my first arrival into Paris.
I've argued this point countless times with friends. Other's experience range from the foul odour of trash and sewerage to the sticky smell of fairy floss. As I've mentioned previously everyone has a different first scent in a new city. Each to their own.
The first sight I take in is the people.
The French are a unique and wonderful breed of people. but the Parisians are different again in comparison. Like the New Yorkers to the States they are quite noticeably dissimilar. Their accents are looser, their appearance is not the same and their mannerisms reflect their alternate cultural background. Paris has the largest number of migrant families than any other city in France which gives it a true feel of a multicultural metropolis.
They are confident and sophisticated, no matter what their choice of career. To be a Parisian oozes pride just for that fact.
They dress better than any other city in the world in my eyes. In many other cities, women dress to show off their bodies. In Paris (and much of France) they dress to show off their style.
Yes Milan may have the top designers but in Paris even the lower end of the socioeconomic population take pride in their appearance every single day. The women and men of Paris are beautiful in many different ways.
I can venture to nearly every part of this enormous city and find hidden gems. Yes of course visit the world famous sights but take some time out of your visit to venture around. Walking this city I find is the best way to truly discover. You walk, you stop and look and walk some more. For longer journeys use the metro. What better way to immerse yourself with the locals?
My Paris might be different to your Paris. My mum was a Portuguese born immigrant in Paris for much of her young life. I have a special connection with this city. You can find your own connection also I'm sure if you look close enough.
